Dream Book Gallery

My neighbor Jerome is a pretty active retiree so I see him in the halls of our apartment building almost daily. I’ve noticed he has a few catch phrases that rotate, and one of the ones that pops up a bit more often than the others is “just looking for that number.” I always want to ask if he has ever looked for help outside of his own mind, perhaps using one of the “Dream Books” you see at various botanicas and bodegas in the neighborhood.

I’m pretty sure the idea is that the person on the cover has dreams where these numbers come to them, perhaps along with visions of pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, and green clovers? Whatever the case I find the art for these a triumph over rationality, a fascinating look into the rich and varied landscape of esoteric imagery.

To purchase your own Dream Book I would suggest Cat Yronwode’s exhaustive and fantastic Lucky Mojo Curio Co. or Sneaky Pete’s.
