Intro to Grease as a Primer to Modern Mystery Religions

I was watching Grease the other day and was struck by the numerous allusions to various mystical systems, in particular those endorsed by Aleister Crowley, such as the Golden Dawn and the OTO. Personally, I wish there was a Typhonian take, but that’s just my own personal taste.

I solve my problems and I see the light
We gotta plug and think, we gotta feed it right
There ain’t no danger we can go to far
We start believing now that we can be who we are

This reads as alluding to Lucifer as the lightbringer, illumination, pushing one’s personal boundaries and the Law of Thelema (Do What Thou Wilt), as in be who you are, follow your will.

Grease is the word
They think our love is just a growing pain
Why don’t they understand, It’s just a crying shame
Their lips are lying only real is real
We start to find right now we got to be what we feel

This would be in reference to the Thelemic tenet “Love is the law, love under will”, saying that masses don’t understand and it is too bad that they live with their eyes closed. The traditional church lies about the true nature of the world and that initiates need to persue their own way.

We take the pressure and we throw away
Conventionality belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believing now that we can be who we are

Rejecting the traditional church initiates have the ability to achieve Godhood by realizing that the ability to become like God lies within.

This is the life of illusion
Wrapped up in trouble laced with confusion
What we doing here?

Reject the material world as a prison, the spiritual world is where true meaning lies.
