I first discovered Michael Moorcock around 7th grade, picking up a bunch of his Elric books at the Walden Books in Middleburgh Hts. While my parents would shop at Marc’s I would hit the book store, I’m sure all Cleveland westsiders know what I’m talking about. I remember enjoying them but then there was a gap, I was reintroduced to him when Grant Morrison riffed on/ripped off one of his characters Jerry Cornelius, calling him Gideon Stargrave and putting him in The Invisibles. That led to me reading the Cornelius books which were exactly what I was looking for at the time. I’ve read an average of one Moorcock book a year since then, they are like candy, I can chew right through them, always entertaining.
There seems to be some phases that his covers go through, from the art nouveau tinged Elric reprints of the 80s to the rather sophisticated covers of the 90s & 00s. Personally, my favorites are the late 60s/early 70s ones, the ones that take the Peter Max pop art trends of the time and push them far beyond the legal limits. I’ve pulled out my absolute favorites and present them here -
Oh and look, the trailer for the Jerry Cornelius film The Final Programme – Moorcock was far from pleased with the results but it looks pretty entertaining.
And check it out – he is in a really fantastic Hawkwind doc from the BBC -
